Mia's First Year

Jenn and I have a baby girl! Her name is Mia Magdalena Umali, and she was born Wednesday, March 28, 2001. This is our first baby. And this blog will be a daily record of my thoughts during her first year growing up with us.

This page only shows one week's entries. To see older entries, access the archives.

I also have plenty of pictures of Mia.

Rick's Ramblings BLOG is still being updated.

Mia had to leave day-care early today, because the teachers determined she had a fever. Jenn went and picked up Mia a little before noon. Then she took Mia to the pediatrician, where they diagnosed her as having an ear infection. After I got home from work, I picked up Mia's first prescription medicine: amoxicillin. 3 ml three times a day.

Mia herself seemed 'normal'. Inquisitive. Smiling. Reaching out to us, or the edge of the paper or book that we're reading. This shouldn't be a problem.

I took some pictures (81-83) of Mia getting up this morning.

While waiting for me to finish doing the dishes, Mia started to drift to sleep in her high chair. It was quite the sight. Jenn and I were laughing.

Mia got a Skwish today, from a former work colleague of mine. What a fun toy for Mia. She loved holding it, and turning it over. So did Jenn.

Mia didn't nap this afternoon, and as a result, we put her to bed around 6:15PM. Needless to say, she got up again around 6:45PM, and didn't really get to bed until a little before 8PM. Jenn gave her pills for what we thought were her teething. It was another semi-painful cry-session.

We let her cry for fifteen minutes at a time. I was the one who rocked her to bed finally.

This is the hard work of caring for a baby.

This morning, Jenn and I had a chat, and said that Mia missed me after I went to work. She said she was looking around for me. I felt so sad. I was glad to come home.

Tonight, Mia fell asleep during her last feeding. Unfortunately, she was startled awake when Jenn tried to remove her bib. We've startled her awake while crumpling a plastic bag. One second she's sleeping, the next second, she's wide awake, looking around for the source of the noise.

She probably couldn't sleep after this, because we tried to rock her, we tried to give her some more formula, and in the end, we decided to just let her cry in her crib to see if she could 'work it out.' She did get to sleep, after about ten minutes.

Well, after reading my last entries, I have to chuckle. Mia had a bad night.

She woke up at 10:45PM, crying and fussing. After changing her, and rocking her, and even giving her a bottle, we decided (at 11:30PM-ish) to put her in the crib for another shot. She went to bed, after some whimpering. Then, at around 1:20AM, she worked up again, crying and snuffling. We left her in bed, and let her cry it out. I turned off the monitor for the very first time ever. I figured if it's loud and long enough, I'll hear her from the bedroom.

I slept fitfully. Jenn said she heard Mia a few more times last night.

I hope tonight is better. Maybe I won't write the good news about her getting to bed until the morning.
