Mia's First Year

Jenn and I have a baby girl! Her name is Mia Magdalena Umali, and she was born Wednesday, March 28, 2001. This is our first baby. And this blog will be a daily record of my thoughts during her first year growing up with us.

This page only shows one week's entries. To see older entries, access the archives.

I also have plenty of pictures of Mia.

Rick's Ramblings BLOG is still being updated.

I put Mia to bed tonight. I rocked her from her post-nursing fussiness to full-bore sleep. It took about twenty minutes, and it was the first time I had done that in what feels like many weeks.

After two days of 90 degree heat, it was in the upper 60s today. In the evening, I took Mia out for twenty minutes. I forgot to cover her up, and Jenn and I are now wondering if Mia will break into a fever. Mia was wearing a 'footie' though, and so far, she's been sleeping well.

Mia breaks into a squeal of delight when I lift her over my head, and then back to my face. Jenn can make her squeal too. We like the sound of it, especially since she's smiling her "I'm having fun" smile.

I posted some more photos of Mia (pictures 37-42).

Last Saturday, Mia met Haley, one of Jenn's cousins.

I remarked a few days ago that I can't see "that far ahead" into Mia's future. The reality is, I am reminded of what she might be, whenever I spend time with Jenn's cousins. They vary greatly in age: one is out of college, one is in college, two are high-school aged, and Haley is three. Couple this with our next door neighbor's girl (eight months), and I get a feel for how Mia might behave.

Haley was wonderfully playful with Mia. When Mia rolled over, Haley rolled her back, much to my amusement. Nicki and Lindsay each held Mia. So did Jenn's aunt.

I didn't grow up with sisters; I have two younger brothers. I hope that I am a relevant father to Mia when she gets to be older. Sure, there will be things that she must discuss with Jenn, but I hope I can relate to her at some level. Writing this makes me cherish this baby time all the more.

Last night, I rocked Mia to sleep. Yes, Jenn had nursed her just before, and Mia needed only a little help, but I got her to bed with my hands.
