Mia's First Year

Jenn and I have a baby girl! Her name is Mia Magdalena Umali, and she was born Wednesday, March 28, 2001. This is our first baby. And this blog will be a daily record of my thoughts during her first year growing up with us.

This page only shows one week's entries. To see older entries, access the archives.

I also have plenty of pictures of Mia.

Rick's Ramblings BLOG is still being updated.

Mia was a real cry-baby today. It must have been her teething, as I haven't heard her cry this much since when she was first brough home. Jenn came up with the brilliant idea of giving her Tylenol for her discomfort. Mia felt better a few minutes after taking the dosage, although she never seemed to get 100% comfortable (i.e. she was fairly fussy). Jenn, however, is tremendously patient with Mia, so I know we'll be fine.

Mia slept for almost three hours at daycare today.

Mia now has a saucer. She likes it!

It took us almost an hour and a half to get Mia to bed. We started around 8PM. I expressed my exhaustion and consternation to Jenn, but she said that an hour and a half of this was nothing, compared to all the time she has to spend with her during the day.

I shouldn't complain, but I'll be happy when I don't have to help Mia go to sleep.

(On the other side: once she's asleep, she stays asleep until around 6AM, more often than not. This we do enjoy.)

When I got home, Mia rolled over (to her left) twice in my presence. I asked Jenn about this, and she said she's been doing that for most of the day. Of course now we're scared that Mia will roll over while sleeping. But Mia seems to enjoy her new skill. When she gets to the otherside, she holds her head up by propping herself on her forearms. She tried to crawl, but she still does not know how to do this (although she does succeed at rolling herself in a circle very slowly).

Before I forget this, I must recall that a neighbor once said to me that the days go by slowly, but the years go by very fast. Her son just celebrated his 13th birthday!

Mia's grandfather (Jenn's Dad) visited today. Of course, I was at work. They all went out for lunch (again at Panera) and had a good time.

I witnessed Mia rolling over this afternoon. Actually, she rolled over only once.

She was on her back, and rolled to a half-way point. She rolled back, then heaved herself over to the other side. When she got there, she stared blankly at her new perspective. I clapped, and let her stay on her stomach until she started crying. This is one of the development milestones, and one I was amazed to watch for myself.
