Mia's First Year

Jenn and I have a baby girl! Her name is Mia Magdalena Umali, and she was born Wednesday, March 28, 2001. This is our first baby. And this blog will be a daily record of my thoughts during her first year growing up with us.

This page only shows one week's entries. To see older entries, access the archives.

I also have plenty of pictures of Mia.

Rick's Ramblings BLOG is still being updated.

With Mia's crawling ability, my weekend "posts" with her are now more tiring. She'll start at one end of our living room, and quickly crawl to the other end, often examining some nook or cranny that requires my getting up. Not that I'm complaining! But I'm getting up off my seat many times an hour.

Mia discovered the tempting beauty of our stereo system. She'll crawl over there, and just as she's about to press a button, I'll pick her up, and point her in another direction. This is only a short-term distraction, as she will eventually return to the stereo.

She doesn't like sitting still anymore, that's for sure.

On the medicine front, Mia is really liking it now. She all but sucks on the dropper of augmentin now. Tonight, she had her medicine while in her high chair. I didn't have to hold her hands, which usually flutter around in protest.

Jenn said that Mia gave a kiss to the smallest baby at day care today (a two-month old). Mia crawled over and pressed her face on the little baby. Does she even know what she's doing?

Jenn showed me that Mia can 'kiss' her. Mostly, it's just a forward movement of her head towards Jenn's cheek or lips. But it delights Jenn. Then she said "Mia, give Daddy a kiss!" And I leaned down, and Mia pecked me. Oh heaven!

Tonight's feeding of Mia's medicine went better than expected. She seemed more used to it. She did fuss, but she also kept almost all of it in her mouth this time. Another few days of this medicine, but she seems much better now.

When you hold Mia up close to a mirror, she'll stare at herself, smiling. Then she'll say her one syllable ("da") very quietly to her reflection, as if she were carrying on a conversation. No luck in getting her to say "ma" yet.

We snuck up on Mia twice today (once in the morning, and once in the evening) to administer her medicine. She certainly doesn't like it, and spits up a portion of it, but she doesn't cry so much as she whimpers in protest.

Mia's awfully sick now. An ear infection once again. She started feeling bad yesterday. During the evening, she woke up a few times. We came to her in the early part of the night (10PM-ish), but let her have a fitful sleep.

Today, at the pediatrician's, Jenn found out that our original doctor is leaving the practice. But we've been seeing other doctors in that office, so we should be OK. The new doctor gave Mia a prescription for Augmentin, which Mia will take twice a day. Jenn was glad I'll be home each time to hold Mia's arms.

This morning, after Mia's morning nap, I went to get her after hearing a strange rattling noise over the monitor. When I got to her room, she was upright, holding onto the side of the crib. It was a strange sight, but I quickly got past it, and took her out. Once I told Jenn, she began the work to lower the mattress in Mia's crib.

Jenn said "this means she can pull herself upright", but we have not seen her do this ourselves. She does attempt to 'climb' up to my shoulders after she crawls to me, and her legs do attempt to push herself up when she's halfway up my chest, so I think today's crib sighting is really her first attempts.
