Mia's First Year

Jenn and I have a baby girl! Her name is Mia Magdalena Umali, and she was born Wednesday, March 28, 2001. This is our first baby. And this blog will be a daily record of my thoughts during her first year growing up with us.

This page only shows one week's entries. To see older entries, access the archives.

I also have plenty of pictures of Mia.

Rick's Ramblings BLOG is still being updated.

With my return to work this past week, my time with Mia has dwindled to a few hours in the morning, and a few hours at night. I get up at her first feeding, which is between 5AM and 7AM, and I leave for work by 8AM at the latest. I typically get home by 5:45PM. Sadly, I wish my commute could be better (the trip to work is fine, but coming home is hit or miss).

I now fear coming home one day, and Mia will be carrying on a conversation with Jenn.

Today, I must point out that Mia is really starting a "look-and-grab-lightly" phase. Whether on her back, or cradled in our arms, or sitting in her high chair, she will now look at a nearby toy (we try to put a toy near her reach whenever we can), and attempt to grab it. Her clutch is not very strong ("grab-lightly"), but the action ("look-and-grab") is becoming more consistent. She's grabbed for her burp rag (which is draped over our shoulders at all times), and she's grabbed on the loose parts of her dress.

Mia was able to nap this afternoon, and Jenn was able to eat and get rest. Yesterday, Jenn visited the day care for a couple of hours to fill out paperwork, and to 'test drive' Mia with the kids. From her report, the visit went well.

Yesterday was the first day I went to work, leaving Mia at home with Jenn. When I got home, Mia still remembered me, by her wide smile. Jenn was a little out of sorts staying at home. I hope today is better, for both of them.

Jenn bought more toys from the Whoozit family (Hoopla by Andre). We now have a Baby Feelix, a Wigloo, and a Silly Spider.

I love these toys myself. They really appeal to my sense of whimsy. There's a Giant Whoozit that's good for children, but probably more for adults like me (it's over $200!).

For the past two nights, Mia has gotten up around 3AM. This is good. For those nights, we've put her to bed around 9:30PM. However, after nursing her, and rocking her, Mia seemed to refuse sleep. She would be drowsy (we can tell by her droopy eyes, and her yawning), but when we put her into the crib, she would fuss, and then ultimately start crying.

Lately, Jenn's been putting Mia to sleep by bringing her into our bed. Even then, the sleep that follows until we get up (around 6AM) is fitful. This is definitely a sleeping pattern change. We'll keep our eye on it.

Today was my first father's day.

Mia (thanks to my wife) gave me a card that I will cherish forever. Mia (thanks to my wife) wore a cute outfit that said "Daddy's Little Girl".
