Mia's First Year

Jenn and I have a baby girl! Her name is Mia Magdalena Umali, and she was born Wednesday, March 28, 2001. This is our first baby. And this blog will be a daily record of my thoughts during her first year growing up with us.

This page only shows one week's entries. To see older entries, access the archives.

I also have plenty of pictures of Mia.

Rick's Ramblings BLOG is still being updated.

Jenn and I met with a financial advisor to figure out how to start saving for Mia's college education. We spent a good amount of time discussing something that is eighteen years away. Our advisor said he'd prepare something for us to read, but the daunting task of saving money for college should start as early as possible.

Yesterday, Jenn and I (with Mia, of course) attended a Child Birth Class Reunion, at Mt. Auburn Hospital (Parsons Auditorium). This reunion was for all the parents who attended certain child birth classes before delivering baby.

We saw a whole bunch of parents, and their newborns. The children ranged from five months old to six weeks old (Mia is seven weeks).

It was quite wonderful being in the presence of so many babies. Older babies (three to five months) seem so much bigger, and more aware of what's going on around them. The parents were wonderful to speak with too. The parents of the older kids shared their wisdom with me: "You never think you can get through it, but you eventually do." They also shared their children's feats: "He goes through an 8 oz. bottle in 30 seconds."

Parents of kids the same as age as Mia commiserated openly: "Whenever we put her down to sleep, she gets up immediately".

It was funny seeing all the car seats and baby carriages/strollers, and comparing notes on the delivery.

I wish we could attend more of these throughout the year.

Mia is starting to make cooing and ahhing noises. I wish I had the equipment to record and post these on the web.

Last night, Mia slept from 11PM to almost 6AM! I woke up a few times in the middle night wondering if I had missed her crying. We're crossing our fingers, hoping that Mia turns out to be one of those luck babies that 'figure out social sleeping on their own'.

Mia winked at her Mom last night.

We were changing her, and while doing so, we were smiling, laughing, and tickling her. Jenn was winking at Mia, when all of a sudden, with this big smile on her face, Mia winked. Jenn jumped back and asked "Did you see that?" Of course I had! The past few times I've changed her, I've winked at Mia, trying to get her to do the same. No luck yet. I'm sure it was a something personal between her and her Mom.
